How to Make Children's Pants with Elastic Waist

Looking for knit pants for your toddler? This problem can be easily solved if you have a sewing machine, 07 yards of knit fabric, about one meter of 2" wide elastic tape and a little skill of sewing garments from knit fabrics.
In this tutorial I'll show how to sew very simple pants with elastic waistband.

Place parts of pattern to wrong side a fabric and cut all parts of pants. Don't forget add seam allowances.
These pants have a waistband with elastic strip and cuffs from another knit fabric.

Start sewing childrens pants

Side seam with seam allowance 1.5 cm

Place your both pieces of pants legs together. Now you need to sew a side seam with seam allowance 1.5 cm.

Sewing with overlock sewing machine

If you don't have an overlock sewing machine you can use zig zag stitches.

How to add cuffs to bottom edges of pants

Place cuff to bottom edge of pants

Place cuff to bottom edge of pants and baste it by hand.

Internal seam (in-seam) of pants

After stitching these details you need to sew internal seam (in-seam) of knit toddler pants.

Now you need to neaten all edges

Now you need to neaten all edges of the cuffs and the internal seam.

Fold the cuff inside the knit pant leg

Fold the cuff inside the knit pant leg as shown and press it.

We continue to sew knit pants

Wind a bobbin thread

Wind a bobbin thread having the same color as main fabric of pants.

Baste the cuff around the pants leg

Baste the cuff around the pants leg and sew it with straight stitches, as shown.

Turn out the childrens knit pants

Turn out the children's knit pants on the right side. Look! Using the trick with bobbin thread this seam is almost invisible on fabric.

Place the left part to the right part of pants along crotch curve together.

Now you need wrap a waist your child with elastic strip. Do not tighten it too!
Note: During cutting the elastic tape don't forget add a seam allowance.

How to make an elastic waistband

Now you need make an elastic waistband.
First, stitch the edges of waistband and elastic strip.
Second, you need to divide both details into four equal segments and put the marks.

Insert the elastic into the folded waistband

Insert the elastic into the folded waistband. Align the marks and pin it, as shown.

Vertical stitches across the elastic waistband

Make four vertical stitches across the elastic waistband. At the same time these seams divide it on four equal parts.

Elastic inside the waistband casing

With this trick the elastic inside the waistband casing will not roll up.

Stitch along the edges of elastic casing, as shown.

The waistband of your kid's pants should look like this.
Note: Don't leave this sewed edge raw. During wash it'll be fraying.

These knit pants for your child can wear a few years. While a kid is small you can lift up the cuffs.

You can lower down the cuffs of pants

If your toddler gets older and pants will become shorter you can lower down the cuffs of pants.
