How to Draft a Pattern of Half Circle Skirt

In this post you will find free skirt pattern with step-by-step tutorial on how to draft the half circle skirt pattern.
The half circle skirt is very easy and popular model a skirt. Drafting of half circle skirt is very easy and even beginner can do it right. Sewing is also very simple and I recommend to sew circle skirt or half circle skirt every beginner first, before sewing more complex skirts models.
The half circle skirt is is suitable for everyone, from adult women to young girls of school and preschool age.
For drafting a half skirt pattern you need take two your body measurements only: 'Waist circumference' and 'Skirts Length'.
Fabric consumption for circle half skirt

Minimum fabric consumption for sewing a skirt is 140 - 150 cm (55" - 60") depending on the width of the fabric. To sew a skirt of this style you need a square piece of fabric having all sides 140 - 150 cm (55" - 60").
Note: Such fabric consumption will be enough If you wear garments 44 - 48 (10 - 14) sizes. In any cases by drafting a skirt from squqre of fabric you need use this rule: The more is waist circumets the shorter the length of the skirt will be.
Beginning of drafting a half circle skirt pattern

The pattern of half circle skirt can be made directly on the fabric, like this pencil skirt pattern.
If you will be build a skirt pattern directly on the fabric you need to fold the fabric in half, as shown.

Pin the edges of folded fabric. Use thin and sharp pins only.
Making a half circle skirt pattern on paper

My website is educational and so many lessons are made on samples of fabric without sewing real garments. In this tutorial also is used a little piece of fabric for drafting a skirt with conditional dimensions.
If you can not make a pattern of skirts directly on the fabric, you need have to draft a pattern on paper.
Now start drafting a pattern. First draw a square with all sides having 150 cm.

Draw a slanting line from corner to corner dividing the square into two halves.
The construction of the waistline

As mentioned above, you need to take two measurements only: 'Waist circumference' (W) and 'Skirts Length' (L). The measurements have a notation in letters: W and L.
to draft the waisline of half circle skirt you need use this calculation: R = 0.32 x W.
Note: You need use a value of full waist circumference (W).

Now you need to calculate the value R (radius) and lay this segment from the vertex of the angle, as shown.

Next, you need to lay this segment from the vertex of lower angle also.

Draw both curves of waistline a skirt on fabric, using this calculation.
Drawing a hemline of half circle skirt

Now you need from waistline to lay a skirt length measurement, as shown. Along this curve you make hem your skirt.

Next, you need to lay this segment on the second part of skirt, if you draft pattern direct on fabric. For paper pattern is used one part only.

At this stage the pattern of half circle skirt is completed. Using this scheme you need to make marks on the folded in half fabric.

Letters indicate all segments of the pattern.

The pattern of half circle skirt can be drafted in folded position of fabric. But are cases when skirts patterns need to draft in the deployed position of fabric. On this photo is drawn such a skirt scheme.
How to cut a half circle skirt

Using a paper pattern, or calculation that were made directly on fabric you will be have on fabric such scheme. Pay attention, that between both lines of the hem you need to leave the area for the seam allowances.

Take into account when constructing the skirt pattern the allowances alongside seams (1-1.5 cm).

You must also take into account in advance that this half circle skirt will be fastened with an invisible zipper. The belt of the skirt will be rigid because there are no assemblies along the waist line. A skirt having the waistband with an elastic casing can be made, but you will learn about it in another lessons.
