Sewing Terms Starting with Letter G

Gathering
Gathering is used to shorten a length along edges of fabric. On this photo is a way how to tighten a fabric edge with two threads. Be careful when pulling these threads, they can be broken. Read more: How to make a circle skirt.

Gingham
Gingham is a cotton fabric having two contrasting tone. This is main feature of gingham. Second feature: it is a medium-weight fabric made from dyed cotton or cotton-blend fine yarns.

Grain of fabric
Grain is direction of vertical edge a fabric. Direction of fabric you should be taken into account before laying out pattern pieces and cutting details of garments. Many fabrics are stretched only horizontally (along grosswise grain).

Graph Paper
Graph paper on white background is used for drafting patterns. Graph paper can be in sheets or in roll.

Gusset
This is a triangular piece of fabric is inserted in-between edges of narrow part of garments. Gusset is most commonly used to expand under a sleeve and pants.
