Sewing Terms Starting with Letters V and W

Velcro
Nylon fastening tape having two different parts. One side that has hooks clings to second side having pile. Velcro (hook-and-loop tape) is used instead of zippers on garments, bags, shoes etc.

Vent
Vent is a slit on back or front panel of skirt or dress. Skirt vents are used for decoration and to ease movement.

Waistline
Waistline is sewing measure that used for drafting patterns of garments. This line is narrowest place around a torso (standard size).

Welt Pocket
A welt pocket is hole with two narrow welts. A welt pocket is sewn to back of men's trousers.

Wool
Wool of sheep, goats, lama is source for manufacturing cashmere and mohair, alpaca etc.

Wrong side
Wrong side of fabric located inside garments. An underside of fabric is used for marking lines of pattern.

Yarn for Knitting
Yarn for hand knitting is different from the knitting machine yarn. Yarn for hand knitting is thicker and usually wound in yarn skeins or balls that are not suitable for knitting machine.
