Sewing Terms Starting with Letter D

Darts
If you want to sew a skirt or pants you should be able make the darts. Along the waistline you need to make two darts on front and two on back.

Denim
Denim is a kind of 100% cotton fabrics. The kind of this fabric is indigo denim having white and blue (black) threads, so the top surface is blue or black, and underside is whitish.

Diagonal Stitch
Diagonal stitch is used very often for handicraft and decorative finishes.

Differential Feed Dogs
Modern overlock sewing machines have a differential feed system. The feed dog has two independent parts. They will be able to move a fabric at different ratio. Using a differential feed knob will stretch knit fabric (0.6) or gather (2).

Double Needle
How to use a double needle? A twin needle you can insert in needle bar like an usual needle of sewing machine. But it has two needles attached to a single shank.
For sewing with twin needle you must use three threads. Two of them ned to insert in sewing needles and one will be used for threading a bobbin. Bobbin thread catch both needles threads.

Double Sided Adhesive Tape
Double sided adhesive tape is used for sewing some garments from genuine leather. Seam allowances are expanded in different directions (open) and to fix with glue or using double sided adhesive tape.

Drive Belt
All modern household sewing machine has a drive belt that connect an electric motor with main shaft.
